David Rhind , vice-chancellor and principal of City University, has been appointed chairman of the Statistics Commission. He has been a member of the commission since its inception in 2000 and will take up the post on April 30 after Sir John Kingman retires.

The following have been appointed to the Arts and Humanities Research Board:
Judith Hooper , former head of management information in the finance team of the Higher EducationFunding Council for England, has been appointed associate director of finance; Yvonne Hawkins , former head of the AHRB's research awards, has been appointed associate director of programmes; Steve Morgan , former head of projects and evaluation, has been appointed associate director of evaluation and analytic services; Chris Millward , former head of research grants at the University of Durham, has been appointed head of the research division; and Emma Wakelin , former research awards team leader, was appointed head of the postgraduate division at the beginning of February.

The Scottish Further Education Funding Council has appointed five new members:
Mervyn Jones , senior adviser with responsibility for social investment strategy, government and external representation, who is also a member of Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley; Kenryck Lloyd-Jones , policy officer for Scotland at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy; Jennifer Rees , executive director of corporate planning at Glasgow Caledonian University; Ian Murning , principal of a private-practice firm of chartered surveyors; and Rosalind Micklem , principal of Cardonald College, Glasgow.
