Anderson leaves Oxford to rejoin Imperial

Roy Anderson, the distinguished British epidemiologist, has resigned his chair at Oxford University after four months of rows and inquiries.

The scientist is to return to Imperial College, London, where he studied as an undergraduate and rose to become head of biology in the autumn to help lead research at two new institutes.

Professor Anderson was temporarily suspended earlier this year while being investigated for falsely alleging that a female colleague had slept with the head of zoology before gaining her post. He subsequently apologised in writing.

He also resigned as director of the Wellcome Trust's Centre for the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, Oxford, a month ago, shortly before two inquiries cleared him of financial impropriety but found regulations had been breached and criticised his management. He is a governor of the Wellcome Trust.

Professor Anderson said he was delighted to be back at the college where he spent 16 years before leaving for Oxford.

"Imperial College has first-class research in infectious diseases and epidemiology, from both the basic science and clinical viewpoints," he said.

The University of Oxford said recruitment to fill the vacant Linacre chair would begin soon.
