An Arctic institute has been established on Iceland to cement internal collaboration in the country's research environment, promote sustainable development in the Arctic areas and strengthen Iceland's participation in international efforts within the Arctic zone. Named after Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962), a Polar researcher and anthropologist, the Stefansson Arctic Institute is located at Akureyri on Iceland's north coast.
