Air travel adds to global warming

A scientist has warned that air travel is having a major impact on global warming.

Tim O'Riordan, a member of the UK sustainable development commission from the Zuckerman Institute for connective environmental research at the University of East Anglia, said the daily air shuttle from Aberdeen to London emitted as much carbon dioxide and other warming gases as there would be if every passenger travelled to their destination alone in a car.

He said that if this fact was multiplied by the number of flights taking off around the world each day, the size of the global environmental challenge was immense.
