Brussels, 11 Nov 2003

An international workshop on air pollution and cultural heritage will take place in Seville, Spain, from 1 to 3 December.

The event is being organised by the EU funded CARAMEL project, which is analysing the role of black crusts in stone decay, as well as the relationship between elemental carbon particle contents and monument blackening rates.

Data collected under the umbrella of the project will be disseminated at the event, and contributions will be made from researchers, environmentalists, practitioners and cultural heritage authorities.

Topics for discussion include:
- the effect of traffic on monuments;
- back crust analysis;
- atmospheric soot particles and the aesthetic impact of soot deposits;
- the soiling rate of monuments;
- the cleaning of facades.
