Nicholas Stern, a professor of economics and government at the London School of Economics, and Haleh Afshar, a professor of politics and women's studies at York University, are to be appointed to the House of Lords as crossbench peers. Professor Afshar is a government adviser on public policy relating to Muslim women and Islamic law. Professor Stern previously headed the Government Economic Service and was an adviser on the economics of climate change.
