Welsh Education Minister Jane Hutt has announced £23.5 million funding for research into some of the world's major environmental challenges. The cash from the Welsh Assembly Government will help support a £55-million project for a Biosciences and Environment Alliance between Aberystwyth and Bangor universities, bringing together the former's newly formed Institute for Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences and the latter's College of Natural Sciences to form the largest group of biological, environmental and rural scientists in the UK. Ms Hutt said it would tackle key issues such as climate change, renewable energy, global food security, and plant and animal diseases.
