A group of more than 20 senior academics, including vice-chancellors and polytechnic directors, held a two- day private meeting last week to keep up the pressure on ministers for a radical reform of higher education funding. Although no formal resolutions were adopted, there was a consensus backing full-cost tuition fees supported by loans and bursaries.

Long-term scientific research collaboration with Argentina is to resume for the first time since the Falklands War. A five-year agreement for joint research in biologically influenced corrosion will shortly be signed by the Royal Society's foreign secretary Anthony Epstein and his Argentinian counterpart ... The agreement has grown out of the exchange programme operated by the Royal Society and Argentina's Concinet (the national council of scientific and technical researchers). Since its resumption in March 1985, it has sent 25 British scientists to Argentina and 16 Argentinian researchers to the UK.
