Our children are our future. Over the past several years, various initiatives across campus, and within the London community, have coalesced in a concerted effort to strategically address barriers to the successful development of our children and youth. From mental and physical health to learning outcomes and capacity-building for parents, teachers, professionals and communities, this work can only happen in close partnership with our communities.
Key Research Initiatives
Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children
CREVAWC is committed to the development and application of knowledge for the prevention of violence against women and children through promoting innovation, collaboration and equality. Since 1992, the centre has led many groundbreaking policy and legislative changes related to domestic violence, child protection, child custody and labour employment standards.
Centre for School Mental Health
The Centre for School Mental Health addresses the need for improved school-based promotion and prevention and intervention services for children who may be at risk for, or who present with, mental health challenges. Its team of researchers, educators, students and administrators is focused on the mental health, well-being and relationship development of children from Kindergarten to grade 12.
Mary J. Wright Research & Education Centre at Merrymount
The Mary J. Wright Research and Education Centre, located in the heart of London, is a community-university partnership between Western and Merrymount Family Support and Crisis Centre. The collaboration is committed to generating, coordinating and overseeing state-of-the-art interdisciplinary basic and translational research that has the potential to inform our understanding of the conditions that influence child outcomes and, in turn, the development of evidence-based early childhood education and intervention programs. These programs are designed to address significant inequalities in opportunity, foster the health and well-being of our most vulnerable children and identify the protective processes for enhancing outcomes for all children.
The Child & Youth Development Clinic
The clinic provides high-quality and affordable psychological assessment, intervention, treatment and language services to children and youth between the ages of three and 18 years of age. The clinic’s goal is to improve the quality of life for children and youth with psychological, educational, language and/or speech difficulties.
Centre for Science of Learning
The first of its kind in Canada, the Centre for Science of Learning fosters collaboration not only between researchers at Western, but between educators in K-12 educational settings. By providing a forum for multidisciplinary exchanges, the Centre will foster collaboration that advances knowledge of how children learn and how such knowledge can transform educational practice and policy.
