We've been poly-bagged

二月 24, 2011

Readers of your article about the threat posed to modern languages, adult education, nursing, Classics, archaeology and anthropology at the University of Glasgow ("Polyglots plot as Glasgow letter screams foul over axe", 17 February) may wish to cross-refer to the university's vacancies web page.

There are 49 academic posts advertised, almost all of them in medical sciences and engineering. Only two are based in the College of Arts: a chair in "global security" and a lectureship in "medical humanities".

This might shed fresh light on comments by the university spokesman quoted in the article, who says that Glasgow's actions are a response to "unprecedented financial pressures". But this is not about making tough financial decisions in a tough financial climate: it is about reshaping the university according to an ideology that is foreign to an institution calling itself a university, not a polytechnic.

The same edition of THE ranks Glasgow seventh out of 113 in its Student Experience Survey. How much longer shall we be able to maintain this position in the face of the current management offensive?
