Recent research suggests how library staff should respond to the threat technology poses to their jobs ("Librarians under threat", and Letters, February 11). The Joint Information Systems Committee-backed Justeis project showed that academic and library staff must work together if students are to use resources effectively.

Getting beyond using learning software as a parking place for PowerPoint presentations requires support for teaching staff. That support could come from IT staff or librarians, but the message is clear - library staff must forget reading lists and focus on virtual learning environments.

And management should invest in the human resources required to realise the spending on VLEs.
