Read carefully

Katie Gramich (Letters, March 16) accuses me of seeing devolution only as a "problem" and of considering solely the English aspect of it in my review of Christopher Bryant's The Nations of Britain (Books, March 9). In fact, I explicitly said that devolution had brought about "alterations and improvements" to our system of government and that Englishness and Britishness were two very different things. I may, as Gramich suggests, be arrogant and self-important in my Englishness, but at least I can read a newspaper accurately.
