The World University Rankings depend largely on a peer-review score based on a survey to which fewer than 1 per cent responded. Regional weighting meant a geographical spread of insti-tutions was virtually guar- anteed. Dare one suggest that most of the top 200 universities are in fact in the US? The one objective measure of scholarship (citations per academic) puts Cambridge outside the top 40. Let's not kid ourselves about where we really stand.
