Letter: Not very broad church (2)

六月 29, 2001

The Lambeth MA in theology takes the doctrinal biscuit. Of course no one expects the Church of England to appoint as archbishop of Canterbury someone whose theological position is at odds with its own. But his degree-awarding powers on the MA - where it would be "inappropriate to ask (the archbishop) to use (his degree-awarding powers) in contexts where candidates are not broadly in agreement with his theological position" - are at odds with what a masters degree signifies: debate, challenge, thought, reason, experiment.

Otherwise, what is the point?
