There seems to be a lot of hot air being expended on the issue of increasing the numbers of state-school pupils in prestigious universities. The Government could solve the problem at a stroke.

Instead of threatening to visit draconian measures on non-compliant universities, it could address itself to the supply side.

Abolition of privately maintained schools would see participation rates from state schools instantly rise to 100 per cent. Does anyone detect a flying pig here?
