Hail the return of the binary divide 3

The Higher Education Funding Council for England says that "not every teacher needs to be engaged in research but might be expected to engage in scholarship to inform their work as teachers". Where to start? Engaging with scholarship, I assume, is what we "teachers" call "reading books". Teaching from other people's research: that will fuel the academic passion that encourages the love of learning and the desire for dialogue with texts in our students. Chaucer knew the point of academia: to "gladly ... lerne and gladly teche". If Hefce does not, it is in the wrong job.
