When Baroness Blackstone, as Higher Education Minister, introduced tuition fees in 1998, she told demonstrating students that it was a socialist measure.

Now, wearing a different hat as vice-chancellor of a new university, she thinks it would be a profound mistake to increase top-up fees.

Can she not see that her breach of the socialist principle of free education for all prepared the way for top-up fees? She owes an explanation to those students struggling with debt.
