At the beginning of one's nurse training, the term pathophysiology may appear somewhat daunting. This textbook is aimed specifically at the second-year nursing student, including those returning to practice. It provides an engaging and supportive array of case studies, clinical applications and useful terminology guides to facilitate understanding and learning, eliminating any uncertainties along the way. It is an informative and factual text, yet it does not engulf or encumber the reader with disproportionate detail.
The book is clearly structured and the common pathologies of each body system are identified by chapter. Each chapter opens with a brief but clear description of the structure and function of each body system - developing and providing the reader with information relevant to different pathological issues, many of which are supported by superb coloured illustrations, photographs and anatomical diagrams.
Initially produced by US authors, the book has been excellently adapted to encompass practice within the UK. Valuable bonus material at the end of each chapter allows readers to assess their understanding and knowledge by way of self-assessment questions, case studies and the option of a companion website. A recurring section called Prevention PLUS! offers concise information on disease prevention and is highlighted in each chapter. Links to online resources facilitate, enhance and promote study and further reading.
In clear, concise language this book truly does explain complex concepts about the pathology of common disorders. As an introductory textbook it offers the student ample background information aided by clutter-free illustrations and photographs that help to visualise and conceptualise the topic.
On the whole, the authors have achieved their aim of creating an introductory text suitable for the second-year nursing student. The text is structurally sound and the informative, easy-to-follow layout enhances its overall suitability for nursing students with little or no knowledge of pathophysiology.
