The authors try to encapsulate an immense literature on emigration, migration and return migration. The book does not have a real competitor since no other study covers such a long chronological sweep, and the authors deserve praise for taking on the whole of the modern period, and particularly for bringing the story up to the present time. The work is rich in detail, shows a good command of a diverse historiography and explains theoretical and conceptual angles well.

Who is it for? Aimed at the university market but is more likely to suit special-subject students and postgraduates.

Presentation: Lots of sub-sections; perhaps too many, making the book seem bitty at times. Some wonderful colour illustrations.

Would you recommend it? For advanced-level students, yes.
