Why is there a Foreword by Matt Ridley? The man is a scientist and former chairman of Northern Rock. Is a passionate advocate of the free market, who was nevertheless happy to borrow £16 billion of taxpayers’ money for his bank, really the ideal candidate to introduce this collection? It is disappointing to see no essay on Enduring Love but there is still plenty here to set you thinking, particularly the pieces on ethics, plagiarism and time. Sebastian Groes’ essay on “newness” in McEwan’s work is exemplary, and also serves to orientate us to the rest of the volume.

Who is it for? All those who have a basic knowledge of McEwan and want to know more.

Presentation The essays follow the chronological development of McEwan’s work. All say something of interest. There’s a revealing interview with the author and good suggestions for further reading.

Would you recommend it? Yes. This will inspire anyone who teaches McEwan.
