For those who want green tourist trade, not just tourists' greenbacks

Environment and Tourism

二月 7, 2003

This book seeks to bring environmental issues into tourism studies. Andrew Holden writes in an accessible and straightforward style without patronising the reader, and this introductory-level book is packed with case-study materials, examples and discussions of how issues play out.

I do not normally like "boxed" studies inserted into the text, but here they are used effectively to offer empirical vignettes.

Alongside this, the book has many useful conceptual diagrams and tables of data. The overall structure moves from the philosophical to the more physical, the economic, the managerial and, finally, on to sustainability agendas, and each is addressed in a variety of contexts.

This book pulls environmental issues in to tourism; so anyone seeking serious case studies of specific physical processes or similar will be disappointed. This also means that the critique and discussion of tourism's "environmental impacts" is curtailed. Likewise, the coverage of the principles of different forms of economic analysis is good for non-economists, but there is no detailed study. This perhaps marks out the necessary limits of an introductory text. The philosophical chapter is a useful summary, though it could have been better linked with subsequent chapters.

All in all, this is a good starter for entry-level students.
