This week's competition to identify a book from its first sentence is from a work by an Oxford academic who called himself Democritus Junior:

"Gentle Reader, I presume thou wilt be very inquisitive to know what antic or personate actor this is, that so insolently intrudes upon this common theatre to the world's view, arrogating another man's name;..."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is October 24.
