This week's competition to identify a book from its first sentence is from a travel account by a radical journalist and politician:

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is July 4.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Roy Porter's The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity , was Sandra Reynolds of Wolverhampton University.
