First Impressions

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from an anonymously published novel whose title is an anagram:

"If the reader will excuse me, I will say nothing of my antecedents, nor of the circumstances which led me to leave my native country;..."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is November 22.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Jonathan Swift's A Tale of a Tub , was David Currie of the department of computer science, University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
