This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a history book by a novelist close to Dickens and Disraeli:

"To vindicate the memory of the Athenian people, without disguising the errors of Athenian institutions;..."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is May 18.
