This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a short story that won its author a Nobel prize:

"He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and the closing date is November 26.
