This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is taken from a semi-autobiographical book in which the author's friends, including W. H. Auden, appear under fictitious names:

"To look at, Mr Holmes was a short, stout, middle-aged man with reddish hair just beginning to get thin on the crown."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and the closing date is July 16.

Entries, including postal address, should be sent to

or emailed to theschat@thes.co.uk
