This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a self-caricature by an English novelist:

"It may happen in the next hundred years that the English novelists of the present day will come to be valued as we now value the artists and craftsmen of the late 18th century."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and the closing date is October 2.
