First impressions

This week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from the work of a US marine biologist who alerted the world to the dangers of insecticides:

"There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings."

The winner receives a £20 book token and the closing date is June 16.
