First Impressions

四月 24, 1998

This week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from the work of a Dutch Jew who was expelled from his synagogue for his unorthodox views:

"By cause of itself I understand that whose essence involves existence, or that whose nature cannot be conceived except as existing."

The winner receives a £20 book token and the closing date is April 28.

Entries should be sent to
First Impressions
Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield
London E1 9XY

faxed to 0171-782 3300
or emailed to

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Charles Darwin's Voyages of the Beagle , is John Finney of University College London.
