First Impressions

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from an author who won a Nobel prize but was forced to turn it down:

"On they went, singing 'Eternal Memory', and whenever they stopped, the sound of their feet, their horses and the gusts of wind seemed to carry on their singing"
