Final Word

七月 26, 1996

This week's Final Word comes from an author who trained as a doctor and, in this instance, was inspired by an artist:

"A quotation from the Bible came to my lips, but I held by tongue, for I know that clergymen think it a little blasphemous when the laity poach upon their preserves. My Uncle Henry, for years Vicar of Whitstable, was on these occasions in the habit of saying that the devil could always quote scripture to his purpose. He remembered the days when you could get 13 Royal Natives for a shilling."

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Bleak House by Charles Dickens, is Barbara Singh of Rosebery Gardens, London.
