This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from an attack on socialism that was published during the Second World War:

"Contemporary events differ from history in that we do not know the results they will produce."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is October 17 The winner of last week's competition, who identified William Morris's News from Nowhere , was Patrick Ainley of the School of Education and Training, Greenwich University.
