This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work by a poet and diplomat:

"In these memoirs or recollections there are gaps here and there, and sometimes they are also forgetful, because life is like that..."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is April 25.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Growth of the Soil by Knut Hamsun, was Paul Shanley, deputy registrar of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
