First Impressions

May 24, 2002

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a science-fiction writer who called his work "logical fantasy":

"When I was quite small I would sometimes dream of a city - which was strange because it began before I even knew what a city was."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and the closing date is May 28.

Entries, including postal address, should be sent to

First Impressions
The THES
Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield
London E1W 1BX

faxed to 020 7782 3300
or emailed to theschat@thes.co.uk

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Ernest Gowers's The Complete Plain Words , is Vin Arthey of Bournemouth University.
