First Impressions

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is by a novelist who was once a policeman:

"U Po Kyin, Sub-divisional Magistrate of Kyauktada, in Upper Burma, was sitting in his verandah"

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and the closing date is April 16.
