First Impressions

This week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from the work of an economist familiar with a trinity of continents:

"Starvation is the characteristic of some people not having enough food to eat. It is not the characteristic of there not being enough food to eat."
