The Context - Why We Need You

'Reimagining Pathways into Environmental Science through Showcasing Technical Careers' is a 29- month project at Durham University funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The project aims to empower young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds into a technical career in environmental science. Part of the NERC 'Opening up the Environment 2026' work programme, the project seeks to lead and influence opportunities to enable a technical career. It collaborates with environmental science partners to develop opportunities for young people to consider a career in environmental science. It will evaluate and embed learnings from the project that will influence T Level policy and curriculum development. The project has workstreams around the promotion of technical careers, T Level placements, and policy and partnerships between regional Further Education colleges and environmental science industrial partners.

The Role and the Department

The RPM will manage the day-to-day administration of the project including project timeline, key deliverables, financial management (in liaison with the RIS post-award team) and meeting administration. The RPM will support the workstream leads in the organisation of key elements within each workstream, including collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders (including FE Colleges and students) to organise and establish T Level placement opportunities and meeting liaison with industry partners and collaborators. The RPM will lead on event organisation and marketing, and the communications and engagement plan. The PM will work alongside the project team to ensure the smooth running of the project and that risks are mitigated and managed. The RPM will also be involved in the project reporting phase enabling the dissemination of outputs, as well as the final close of the project.

Working arrangements:

This role is full time (35 hours/week) but we will consider requests for flexible working arrangements including potential job shares. It is expected that this role will be predominantly face-to-face on campus, and the successful applicant will be prepared to locate to the northeast of England. There will be some scope for hybrid working arrangements in agreement with line manager, but this post will not be fully hybrid.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.

The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver an industry innovation research project as part of a research team developing molecular and sequencing workflows for microbial characterization. The work supports the rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation using a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform. Responsibilities include next-generation sequencing (NGS), qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation, and experimental support for aptamer discovery targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities


	Perform microbial community characterization using next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms such as Illumina sequencing or Oxford Nanopore sequencing. 
	Design and perform qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation.
	Prepare DNA sequencing libraries, including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and library preparation. 
	Conduct basic bioinformatics processing of sequencing data, including sequence quality control and taxonomic profiling where required.
	Support aptamer discovery and validation experiments, including nucleic acid preparation, amplification, and molecular characterization.
	Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, and nucleic acid quantification.
	Maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental documentation.


Research & Project Responsibilities


	Plan and execute experimental workflows to support project milestones related to microbial detection and biosensor development.
	Contribute to sequencing-based microbial profiling of environmental and cleaning validation samples.
	Work collaboratively with project investigators and interdisciplinary teams to integrate sequencing and molecular biology results with biosensor development.
	Prepare technical reports and contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and project documentation.
	Support generation of experimental data required for project validation and milestone reporting. Operational Responsibilities
	Ensure laboratory compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations and institutional safety guidelines.
	Manage procurement and inventory of molecular biology and sequencing consumables.
	Maintain laboratory equipment used for molecular biology and sequencing workflows. Mentorship
	Support training of junior researchers, research assistants, and students where required. 
	Contribute to knowledge sharing within the research group.
	To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met.

Job Requirements

Essential


	Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a related field. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous
	Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing technologies, such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms including sequencing library preparation
	Demonstrated experience working with environmental or low-biomass microbial samples.
	Demonstrated experience with DNA extraction and PCR amplification
	Demonstrated experience performing qPCR assays for nucleic acid quantification and molecular analysis, including troubleshooting
	Demonstrated experience with aptamer technologies or nucleic acid-based molecular recognition systems.
	Strong laboratory skills in molecular biology techniques.


Preferred 


	Familiarity with microbial community sequencing workflows such as 16S rRNA sequencing or metagenomic analysis.
	Demonstrated experience with bioinformatics tools for sequencing data processing (e.g., quality control, taxonomic classification, microbial community analysis). 
	Demonstrated experience working in interdisciplinary or industry-linked research projects.

The Faculty of Psychology consists of the Dean's office and the studies service center, as well as the Department of Cognition, Emotion, and Methods in Psychology, the Department of Occupational, Economic and Social Psychology, the Department of Applied Psychology: Work, Education and Economy, the Department of Development and Educational Psychology, the Outpatient Unit for Research, Teaching and Practice. Currently, nearly 3500 students of Psychology are enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs, attending nearly 200 courses per semester, which are taught and supervised by 220 teachers.

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a university assistant prae doc, you will join the Department of Cognition, Emotion, and Methods in Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology. The Department consists of approximately 100 staff members organized in eight research units with fMRI, EEG, fNIRS, VR, eye-tracking, physiology, and brain stimulation facilities. The interdisciplinary Methods of Psychology team currently consists of several post-doctoral and PhD students with backgrounds in psychology, life science, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, and physics. The focus of our research is to develop new neurotechnologies and AI tools to better understand psychological phenomena and to advance experimental therapies for debilitating psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Your future tasks:

As a new member of our team, you will actively contribute to research, teaching, and administrative activities. This includes:


	Participation in research projects and scientific studies focused on the application of computational methods such as machine learning and large language models to psychological domains, with a particular emphasis on anxiety disorders.
	Finalizing your dissertation agreement within 12–18 months.
	Working on and completing your doctoral dissertation.
	Attending the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behaviour and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe).
	Independently teaching courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
	Contributing to administrative tasks related to research, teaching, and departmental activities.


This is part of your personality:

Candidates should hold an excellent university degree in psychology. Strong computational skills are required, particularly in Python (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn), R (Tidyverse, data.table, caret), JASP, jamovi, and SQL.

Additional experience with Bash, and Git is advantageous. Fluency in both English and German is required.

For this position, we are seeking applicants with a strong interest in applying computational methods - such as machine learning (specifically LightGBM and XGBoost), language processing (LLM and NLP), and statistics - to research on anxiety disorders. The ideal candidate will have experience conducting and analyzing behavioral experiments, setting up online experiments, performing statistical analyses - including data processing and validation - and running computational simulations. Prior teaching experience in statistics, probability, research methodology, and machine learning (in Python and R) is an advantage. Experience in developing and writing grant applications is also desirable.
