Description

Mubadala Arabian Center of Climate and Environmental Sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a post-doctoral associate with expertise in coral reef monitoring and capacity-building programs across Southeast Asia. This position will support a major new NYU Abu Dhabi-OceanX initiative dedicated to strengthening coral reef research, monitoring, and regional training programs throughout Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Malaysia.

This two-year role embeds a regional coral reef specialist withing the Burt Marine Biology Lab to co-develop a multi-year research, monitoring, and training agenda; coordinate annual field missions abrord the RV OceanXplorer; deliver targeted hands-on training for regional partners; host capacity-exchange workshops at NYU Abu Dhabi; and develop data and metadata platforms to support mission research across the region. The Post-doctroral Associate will also contribute to reporting, communications, and stakeholder engagement across Malaysia and neighboring countries, while serving as a scientific representative of the NYUAD-OceanX partnership.

Under the supervision of Professor John Burt, the candidate will play an essential role in designing and implementing a comprehensive two-year activity plan that includes mission preparation, field research, coordination with regional collaborators, and outreach to government and non-government partners. The position require delivering three mission-linked field programs per year in Southeast Asia, developing pre-mission and post-mission activity agendas, conducting on-site meetings and training sessions, coordinating the participation of NYUAD staff, and fostering long-term partnerships to strengthen scientific capacity in the region. The candidate will also lead NYUAD’s annual Southeast Asia Learning Exchange, an immersive week long program that brings regional researchers to Abu Dhabi for advanced training in coral reef monitoring, data analysis, and research planning.

A major component of the role involves developing and managing an integrated multi-stage data and metadata platform for all Southeast Asian monitoring activities performed with OceanX. This includes designing open-access interfaces and communication products tailored to decision makers, researchers, NGOs, and public audiences. The candidate will contribute content for social and traditional media in coordination with NYUAD and OceanX communication teams, and will represent the initiative at regional events, meetings, and outreach activities. Regular coordination meetings and reporting to NYUAD, OceanX, and Dalio Philanthropies will form an ongoing part of the position, along with preparing brief progress updates and a comprehensive annual report summarizing achievements and future opportunities.

The post-doctoral associate will also collaborate with OceanX Education to integrate reef-monitoring activities with educational programming, especially those targeting Malaysian and Southeast Asian youth, educators and local communities. As a full member of the Burt Lab the candiate will contribute to ongoing coral reef research efforts, including experimental design, field surveys, data analysis, and manuscript preparation, as well as participating in lab meetings, seminars, project planning sessions, and broader activities. The candidate will manage a modest annual research budget supporting conference travel, analysis, and professional development.

Applicants must have a PhD in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Coral Reef Ecology, or a closely related field, along with SCUBA diving certification at the Advanced Open Water level or higher. The must have demonstrated experience leading coral reef monitoring programs in southeast Asia, ideally in Malaysia, and a proven ability to communicate scientific information across diverse audiences. A minimum of one year of post-PhD research experience, a track record of lead-author publications, experience in training or capacity-building, and experience in engaging regional partners or government agencies are required. Fluency in English is essential, and fluency in Malay/Bahasa Melayu is a strong asset. Perferred qualifications include PADI instructor-level certification, formal training in monitoring protocols, data-platform or GIS experience, and familiarity with applied science frameworks such as the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) or the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Northumbria University in Newcastle is inviting applications for a Research Fellow position in ice-ocean interactions in Antarctica. This position starts in early 2026 and is fully funded for 2.5 years (30 months) and embedded into the "Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP7 (ISMIP7)" initiative that aims to provide sea level projections from ice sheets to the next IPCC report (for more information on ISMIP7, please see ismip.org). Candidates will undertake research in the field of climate change, with a focus on the future ocean-driven melting of the Antarctic ice sheet. The position is funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation that provides funding for ISMIP7 Core Activities.

We invite candidates with interests and experience in the fields of physical and computational oceanography, numerical glaciology, mathematics, physics, or related disciplines. Working as part of multi-disciplinary team, the successful candidate will support the research activities of the Antarctic ice-ocean focus group of ISMIP7. The aim of the group is to develop a protocol and provide the boundary conditions for ocean-driven melting needed by ice-sheet modelers to simulate the evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet, and to provide an understanding of the influence of choices made on the resulting projections. This project encompasses developing, conducting and summarising the Melt parameterisation Model Intercomparison Project (MeltMIP). MeltMIP, analogously to initMIP for model initialisation (Seroussi et al., 2019), tests the influence of melt parameterisation choices and parameter values on projections, through idealised experiments. Better understanding the ice-ocean interactions could help to reduce the large uncertainties around future Antarctic ice loss. The successful candidate is also encouraged to develop their own research across a broad range of topics, depending on specialty and interests.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The successful candidate will be part of the project “Projected sea level rise from ice sheets: the Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP7 (ISMIP7)”, funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation. They will work closely with the Antarctic ice-ocean focus group co-led by Ronja Reese (PI of the project at Northumbria) and Nicolas Jourdain from the Université Grenoble Alpes, France. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the entire focus group which meets on a monthly basis and the wider ISMIP7 project.

The successful candidate will also be encouraged to collaborate with researchers at Northumbria, specifically, members of the NERC-funded project “Rethining Antarctic Sea-level Projections”, the “Cold Environments” research group, the “Future of Ice on Earth” Peak of Excellence at Northumbria, the “Centre for Polar Observations and Modelling” at Northumbria, and further members of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (Climate Physics, Physical Geography, Physical Oceanography, Glaciology or similar) and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in ice-ocean interactions in Antarctica, numerical modelling of ice sheets or polar oceans, sub-shelf melt parameterisations, and/or analysis of large datasets.

The Prof. Sunil Kumar’s Research Group in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a research assistant to develop AI-enabled healthcare applications.

Key Responsibilities:


	Develop and fine-tune computer-vision models, instance segmentation, and retrieval-based estimation from images and text metadata.
	Build and evaluate monocular depth pipelines and implement multimodal retrieval with re-rankers for robust profile selection.
	Design and train advanced AI models for digital twin: 3D model learning, prediction models from imaging and molecular data, model-based simulation coupling, and uncertainty-aware outputs for lab/clinical validation.
	Work with 3D datasets, time-series sensors, and multi-omics or assay data to create predictive models and digital twin prototypes.
	Maintain reproducible code, experiments, and model/ dataset versioning; develop deployment artifacts (Docker, CI/CD scripts) and support cloud/HPC model training.
	Plan, run and analyze pilot studies (SME pilots and lab validation); participate in data collection, annotation and lab assay coordination.
	Write up results and contribute to publications, technical reports and presentations for academic and non-academic stakeholders.


Minimum Qualifications:


	Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical/computer engineering, applied mathematics, computational biology, bioengineering, or a closely related discipline.
	Solid experience training and evaluating AI models.
	Proficiency in Python and ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
	Experience with dataset curation, annotation workflows, FAISS/embedding retrieval, LLM-based parsing, RAG-style pipeline, and GPU/HPC training.
	Familiarity with 3D data processing or willingness to learn quickly.
	Publications, thesis work, or demonstrable projects in computer vision, multi-modal ML, digital twins or biomedical ML.
	Familiarity with uncertainty quantification and model explainability methods.
	Strong software engineering practices: Git, reproducible experiments, modular code, deploying models in cloud (AWS/GCP) and containerized services (Docker, Kubernetes).
	Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams.
