Your personal sphere of influence: The Polz lab is looking for a highly motivated and skilled computational postdoc to join our interdisciplinary group of microbial ecologists, geneticists and evolutionary biologists. You will work in an interdisciplinary project that includes local and international collaborations. The expectation is that you are highly independent and will take leadership in organizing key aspects of the research, including supervision of masters and undergraduate students and communication with collaborators. The lab provides opportunity for further training and career development, including support in design and execution of presentations, paper and grant writing, and leadership skill development. The contract for this position is limited to 5 years. Your future tasks: The overall goal of the project is to comprehensively analyze the pangenome structure and dynamics of bacteria, heavily focused on vibrios, the major model in Polz lab. This analysis includes constraining the contribution of mobile genetic elements to pangenome diversity, in the context of population structure. Handling large amounts of genomic and metagenomic data Design and execution of computational pipelines Advanced statistical analysis Phylogenetic and -genomic analysis Machine learning This is part of your profile: You should hold a doctoral degree in biology and be highly trained in bioinformatics and computational analysis. Modelling and machine learning expertise is desirable. A publication record in international peer-reviewed journals is expected. Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken) are required as the common language in the institute is English. The ability to work in a team is essential. Please note that we are looking for a highly trained and advanced computational biologist. Simple microbial community analysis will not be sufficient for this position. Your workplace: As a Senior Lecturer, you will be involved in the area of training science and performance assessment methods within the Department of Sport and Human Movement Science. Teaching should convey the close link between scientifically sound theoretical principles and practical applications. In addition, teaching duties may also cover other areas of exercise science and include contributions to the subject of Physical Education and Sport. The working hours amount to 27 hours per week and include a teaching commitment of an average of 16 contract hours per week per Semester. Your future tasks: As a Senior Lecturer, you will be involved in teaching and supervising students in the Department of Sport and Human Movement Science, as well as in the subject of Physical Education and Sport at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Your core responsibilities will include delivering teaching and supervision sessions in the field of training science and performance assessment methods. We expect (further) development of teaching and learning content in modern formats. We expect you to keep abreast of the current state of the art in the field and to undertake further professional development in teaching methodology during periods when you are not teaching. In addition, the role involves administrative duties, particularly in the administration and organisation of teaching. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  Job Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.• Undertake these responsibilities in the project: i. Lead and support high quality publications to disseminate the applied research outcomes. ii. Plan, organize and carry out experiments and trials in the food pilot plant to achieve the objectives iii. Manage and complete the project by presenting the findings in conferences or meetings with industrial collaborator, submitting timely data & documents, and purchase chemicals or consumables. iv. Consolidate the data in order to generate sufficient scientific evidence for meetings slides and report in conferences. v. Engage and communicate with collaborators for progress meetings and report generation to meet the grantor's requirements. The candidate is to liaise and communicate with any internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met and to perform any other adhoc duties assigned by Supervisor.  Job requirements Have relevant competence in the areas of protein chemistry, analytical chemistry for amino acid profiling, polyphenol profile analysis, SDS-PAGE, and protein hydrolysis. Have a degree in Food Science and Technology, or Analytical Chemistry. Possessing a Master's or PhD degree will be advantageous Experience and Knowledge of operating HPLC, MALDI-TOF and Q-TOF Mass spectrometry for protein sequencing, carbohydrate/Sugar analysis, and polyphenol identification. Previous experience as lab-in-charge or equipment-in-charge will be advantageous. Able to communicate with industrial collaborators to share key findings, seek supports, or conducting commercial trials. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety, and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
