Study at VSB-TUO

VSB-TUO currently offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes for more than 12,000 students in engineering, IT, technology, economics, and business administration. Seven faculties provide a range of courses, including many English-taught options for exchange students. Practical training is central to the curriculum, with around 50% of coursework practice-oriented, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the global job market. Furthermore, the PhD Academy offers courses to help doctoral students develop key skills for their scientific careers.

IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center (IT4Innovations)

IT4Innovations is a leading research, development, and innovation centre active in the fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Data Analysis (HPDA), Quantum Computing (QC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their application to other scientific fields, industry, and society. IT4Innovations operates the most powerful supercomputing systems in the Czech Republic. The key research areas include:

Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET)

CEET as an excellent research interdisciplinary institute at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, founded in 2021, brings under one roof four research centres : the ENET Centrethe Nanotechnology Centrethe Institute of Environmental Technology and the Energy Research Centre. The research agenda is focused on the Materials for Energy and Environmental Technologies, Energy Utilisation of Secondary Raw Materials and Alternative Energy Sources, Energy Storage, Transformation and Management and Environmental Aspects and Technologies. With a strength of over 250 scientists and researchers, CEET is committed to conducting from basic to applied research with excellent results and their implementation in practical use. Together we develop new materials and technologies for low-carbon and sustainable energy and environmental technologies in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. Our common strategy is energy transformation, a topic that cuts across all areas of our lives, from transport to industry and the environment. Like the rest of the world, we are searching for emission-free sources while at the same time looking for solutions that avoid generating additional waste and fill-up landfills.

Campus Life

VSB-TUO boasts the largest campus in the Czech Republic and one of the largest in Central Europe, situated in the pleasant surroundings of Ostrava-Poruba, near a forest with paths for inline skating and cycling. The campus features cafes, sports facilities (beach-volleyball and tennis courts, football pitches, etc.), a library, a student relax zone, an art gallery, a geological pavilion, and an observatory and planetarium. These facilities host various events open to the public, including exhibitions, fairs, film screenings, concerts, and educational activities. The campus is well-connected by public transport to other parts of Ostrava.

Ostrava, Czechia’s third-largest city, is a vibrant university hub where students make up about 10% of the population. Lead the design, assembly, optimisation, and high-throughput prototyping of synthetic biology constructs and circuits for plant genome and cell engineering. About the area The Plant Synbio Innovation Centre (PSIC) is based within the School of Molecular Sciences at UWA. As the WA node of Plant SynBio Australia under Bioplatforms Australia and the NCRIS program, PSIC will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research capabilities in plant synthetic biology, and agricultural biotechnology. The facility houses state-of-the-art molecular biology infrastructure and operates in collaboration with national PSBA nodes at ANU, La Trobe University, and Adelaide University. As the WA node, the PSIC is responsible for discovering, developing, and delivering plant synthetic biology componentry, technologies, datasets, and high throughput testing capabilities. PSIC’s activities span high-resolution plant cell atlas generation, regulatory network and genomic ‘parts’ discovery, development of high-throughput upstream screening pipelines to rapidly assess Synbio constructs and components, and implementation of molecular tools for both fundamental research and applied crop-engineering programs. This position will be based in the Bayliss Building on UWA’s Crawley campus, working closely with research, industry, and government partners to develop and deliver cutting-edge plant synbio technologies and services. About the opportunity Develop and apply workflows for modular construct design, multi-gene circuit engineering, targeted genome/transcriptome/epigenome editing systems, construct validation, and rapid upstream prototyping in transient plant-expression systems. Develop and maintain semi-automated design-to-build pipelines, high-throughput testing systems, and quality-control processes to ensure reproducibility, scalability, and performance. Support collaborative projects with academic, government, and industry partners, maintain detailed records, ensure biosafety compliance, and contribute to publications, training, and reporting. About Us The CRADLE SMART (Community empoweRment Approaches to Develop Local, Early Sustainable MAteRnity care with co-developed Technology) care bundle aims to empower women and health workers by co-developing and evaluating innovative, low-cost, accessible, high-quality point-of-care (POC) diagnostic technologies, AI-enhanced ultrasound tools, and mobile technology applications. The Consortium brings together industry partners with world-leading research groups with extensive experience working in Sierra Leone, Zambia, and other L/MIC. By prioritizing locally driven, evidence-based solutions, CRADLE SMART will significantly improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in L/MICs. Through co-development with partners and communities, we will ensure sustainability, scalability, and maximum impact in reducing preventable maternal and perinatal deaths.  About The Role Reporting to the CRADLE SMART Co-Chief Investigators, the Head of Programmes CRADLE SMART is responsible for the management, delivery and reporting on the FCDO funded CRADLE SMART programmes of research including: ensuring the high-quality delivery of research, donor reporting, contract compliance, monitoring, learning and evaluation, overseeing budget spend, managing relationships with co-applicants and downstream partners, and ensuring coordination with parallel programmes in Sierra Leone and Zambia. The Head of Programmes will lead the programmes implementation, and downstream partners’ finance, and operations teams to ensure careful adherence to collaboration agreements as well as donor/grants contracts compliance. They will coordinate the programme implementation teams to meet donor standards and requirements for key submissions. The Head of Programmes will develop strategies and donor compatible internal systems to sustain high compliance performance across CRADLE SMART programmes and in collaboration with implementation teams, carry out high quality reporting. They will coordinate key programme oversight meetings, including Study Steering Committee, Technical Working Group and Co-applicant meetings in accordance with research best practice and donor requirements. As part of their role, the successful candidate will ensure regular review and updates to the CRADLE SMART programme risk register and mitigate programme delivery risks, liaising with donors early to ensure agile programming in the face of obstacles. This is a part time post (21 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31 March 2028. About You To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria A postgraduate degree in public health, global health or a related field, or the extensive relevant experience in these fields. Description The Water Research Center at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Associate to develop calix[n]arene-based covalent organic frameworks for water purification, under the supervision of Professor Ali Trabolsi, Professor of Chemistry and co-PI at the Water Research Center. The successful candidate will develop new calix[n]arene-based covalent organic frameworks for water purification applications. To explore this area of macrocycle-based porous frameworks for water contaminant removal, the candidate will be involved in the directed synthesis of organic macrocycle containing linkers and porous frameworks and then investigate the supramolecular interactions with various organic pollutants. This would require knowledge in the design and synthesis of porous frameworks, particularly in techniques such as Schlenk line, glove box, powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microscopy, and porosity analysis. The candidate is expected to have a thorough understanding of the analytical techniques used to characterize the materials. Experience in the application of such materials to water treatment is preferred. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Applicants must have a PhD in chemistry or materials science.  Excellent experimental and synthetic skills relevant to the project (particularly, synthesis of covalent organic frameworks) are required. Description The Water Research Center (WRC) at NYU Abu Dhabi invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist to contribute to cutting-edge research on membrane fouling and functional membranes, including electrically conductive membranes. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Raed Hashaikeh in the Mechanical Engineering Department, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and graduate students. The Associate Research Scientist will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities at NYUAD. This position supports two interconnected research streams: Investigating membrane fouling mechanisms and mitigation strategies in desalination and water treatment processes. Developing and optimizing functional membranes, including electrically conductive membranes, for use in desalination, energy generation, and electrochemical separations. Responsibilities: Conduct research on membrane fouling (biofouling, scaling, organic fouling), diagnostics, and control strategies. Design, fabricate, and characterize functional membranes (e.g., conductive, anti-fouling, electrochemical systems). Operate and evaluate membrane systems (RO, NF, UF) at lab and pilot scales. Apply advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, EDX, EIS, CV). Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers in materials science, chemical and environmental engineering. Contribute to mentorship of students and lab group discussions. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong background in membrane science with demonstrated expertise in either membrane fouling or electrochemical membrane technologies. Experience with membrane fabrication, testing, and characterization. Solid analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively. A strong publication record with first-author articles. Desired Qualifications: Expertise in fouling analysis and mitigation, including cleaning protocols and pretreatment strategies. Familiarity with conductive membranes, carbon-based materials, or mixed-matrix systems. Experience with electrochemical methods (e.g., EIS, CV) and surface functionalization. Knowledge of materials for charge transport and ion exchange. Prior collaboration with international or multidisciplinary research teams.
