The institution became a Technikon in 1979 before achieving university of technology status in 2004. Student life at VUT includes sport, student accommodation, counselling, healthcare, arts and culture programmes, and co-curricular activities.
The university’s Centre for Sustainable Livelihoods works with communities across the Vaal region to help address issues including food insecurity, nutrition, food gardening and affordable food-processing technologies.
