The University of Zadar is a public university located in Zadar, Croatia, and is recognised as the oldest university in the country. Its origins date back to 1396, when it was founded by the Dominican Order as Universitas Iadertina.
Over the centuries, the institution operated in different forms, including periods of closure and affiliation with other universities. It was re-established in 1956 as part of the University of Zagreb, later becoming affiliated with the University of Split before gaining independence in 2002 and reopening as the modern University of Zadar in 2003.
The university has around 6,000 students and more than 400 academic staff and operates within the Bologna Process framework for European higher education.
It is organised into 27 departments covering subjects including archaeology, linguistics, psychology, sociology, history, economics, philosophy, geography, teacher education, tourism, communication studies and maritime engineering.
Research activity includes areas such as Adriatic onomastics, coastal and karst studies, and marine and maritime research.

Through the ELIXIR research infrastructure and initiatives such as the Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI), the 1+Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative, and Genome of Europe, we are one of the major players in this field in Europe. This is highly collaborative, distributed work. Much of it does not happen within a single lab but across a network of partners – institutional IT teams, national infrastructure bodies, and collaborators across Europe – and our role is to coordinate and integrate these efforts, keeping them moving. A growing and increasingly important part of the work is enabling AI, and in particular agentic AI systems, to operate safely on sensitive data within this distributed infrastructure, in service of translational and clinical research and the wider handling of sensitive healthcare data. We are looking for a senior, independent researcher / staff scientist to take a leading technical role across these projects – someone who can drive their own work, coordinate and mentor more junior colleagues, and act as a confident point of contact with our partners. This is a highly visible, Europe-wide role at the intersection of software engineering, data science, and the life sciences, and it is fundamentally about handling a complex, multi-party effort rather than working in isolation. Your profile Must-have: A PhD (or equivalent experience). We have no hard requirement on the specific field, provided it falls within the range from bioinformatics through to computer science and IT/software development, or a closely related technical area Solid, hands-on experience spanning bioinformatics analysis and workflows, bioinformatics infrastructure and software for data analysis, and/or broader IT and software development, in a rapidly evolving environment where AI is becoming inherent to everything we do; experience with omics and multi-omics data is a strong plus. Duties and Responsibilities Report to Director (RWSAC) and lead the scientific and methodological core of the RWSAC.
