Founded in 1999, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (UWM) is based in Olsztyn, the capital of the Warmia and Masuria region in northeastern Poland.
The main campus is located in Kortowo, a university town separated from the rest of the city.
UWM was founded with the merger of three higher education institutions, which were already established in the city: the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Pedagogical Institute, and the Warmia Institute of Theology.
The university started with 12 faculties and 32 branches of study, but over the years it has expanded its offering, and it now has 17 faculties and 65 branches of study, including: animal bioengineering, fine arts, biology and biotechnology, economic sciences, environmental management and agriculture, food sciences, humanities, law and administration, mathematics and computer sciences, theology and veterinary medicine.
Courses are taught in Polish and English, and the duration of study can be up to six years including one year of internship.
To prepare students for life after university, UWM has an office dedicated to introducing students to companies for employment purposes. This office prepares students for interviews as well as organising job placements during academic study. Additionally, the university organises an annual work fair for students.
On campus, students will find lecture rooms, laboratories, offices. All of the buildings on campus are equipped with state-of-the-art modern facilities. The impressive library also has over 80,000 books.
Notable alumni include politicians Robert Biedroń, Ryszard Bober and Kazimierz Plocke.
