About the University of the Visayas

Basic information and contact details for the University of the Visayas

The University of the Visayas is a private higher education institution in Cebu City, Philippines. It was founded in 1919 by the late Don Vicente A. Gullas as the Visayan Institute. It was the first school to conduct night classes for working students in Cebu City in the 1940s and adopted a ‘Study Now. Pay Later Plan’ that is still used by the Department of Education today. The institute was granted university status in 1948, becoming the first university in Cebu.

The university operates several campuses across Cebu, with its main campus located in the city centre. Additional campuses, including Banilad and Punta Engaño, support specialised programmes and provide access to modern facilities suited to different disciplines.

It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes across several disciplines such as law, medicine, maritime studies, business, engineering, education, and criminal justice. Its maritime education programmes are particularly recognised in the Philippines, supported by simulation facilities and training aligned with international standards. English is widely used as the medium of instruction.
