About Tokushima University

Tokushima University is located in Tokushima, the capital city of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku island in Japan. The institution can trace its origins to the foundation in 1876 of the Tokushima Kisei Normal School. In 1949, six existing schools and educational facilities merged to form what is now known as Tokushima University. The university says its vision is to "search for truth, create knowledge, and inherit and develop eminent sciences and cultures with a spirit of independence and autonomy". It aims to be a "global university", and to "establish a robust and abundantly prosperous society". Students can study in seven graduate schools spread across three main campuses covering about 70 acres of land: Shinkura, located near a picturesque yacht harbour; Josanjima, based in the 1.3km mouth of the Tokushima river; and Kuramoto, which offers a view to Mount Bizan, famous for its cherry blossom trees. The Josanjima campus hosts the faculties of integrated arts and sciences, science and technology and bioscience and bioindustry, and the graduate schools of integrated arts and sciences and advanced technology and science. The Kuramoto campus, meanwhile, houses the faculties of medicine, dentistry and pharmaceutical Sciences, and the graduate schools of medical sciences, oral sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition and biosciences and health sciences. The university has developed strong connections with more than 70 higher education institutions across Europe and Asia. These include University of Bordeaux in France, Seoul National University in Korea and Monash University in Australia. Tokushima University has been home to some of the most notable scientists of recent times such as the engineer Shuji Nakamura, who invented the blue light-emitting diode (LED), and the physicist Shigenori Maruyama who was a recipient of the 2014 Noble Prize in physics.

Job Description:  We are seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to join our team for a fixed-term project. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and validating objective texture testing methods that can accurately categorize foods within the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework, with a specific focus on Level 5 (Minced & Moist). This role will involve designing custom test fixtures, conducting practical laboratory work, and performing data analysis to create a robust and reliable testing protocol. Key Responsbilities: Conduct a comprehensive literature review on food rheology, texture analysis, particle analysis, image analysis and the IDDSI framework. Design and execute experiments to develop new instrumental texture analysis methods suitable for IDDSI Level 5 foods. Validate new methods against existing standards and a sensory panel to ensure accuracy and clinical relevance. Collect, analyze, and interpret data from instrumental and sensory evaluations. Document all experimental procedures, findings, and analyses in technical reports and prepare presentations to industry stakeholders and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborate with a research team, including food scientists, clinicians, and engineers, to ensure the developed methods are practical and clinically relevant. Job Requirements: A degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. A Master's or Ph.D. in a related research field is advantageous. Experience with instrumental texture, image analysis and particle sizing techniques (e.g., texture analyzers, universal testing machines) is highly desirable. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in material characterization techniques, such as stress-strain characterization. Proficiency in analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, R, or other statistical software). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. This position is situated within the Centre for Immersification, dedicated to applied research in immersive technologies and bridging the gap between academia and industry. Research staff at the Centre have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets relevant to industry demands while working on innovative projects within the university. The research team is seeking a Research Fellow or Research Engineer with strong expertise in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and social science methodologies to lead the user research and policy development, as part of an interdisciplinary team investigating harmful user-generated content in virtual worlds as part of a national research initiative on Online Trust and Safety. The primary responsibility of this role is to investigate users’ experiences with harmful content in these virtual environments, review existing reporting guidelines on these platforms, and evaluate users’ responses to alternative mechanisms. The successful candidate will work with a diverse team of faculty members, engineers, and industry partners, including labs at the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS) at NTU. Technical skills, natural curiosity, versatility, and enthusiasm are highly desired traits that will enable success in this fast-paced environment. About the project: ChirTrans investigates how chirality of swimming bacteria determines their active transport processes in complex microstructured heterogeneous environments and in complex shear flows. It combines computational and theoretical modeling at the University of Vienna with experiments performed at ESPCI Paris. Our previous work demonstrated the importance of bacterial chirality in transport in simple microchannel flows and near plane surfaces. ChirTrans now aims to uncover how chirality impacts bacterial transport in more complex microstructured environments. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to internationally visible, frontier research.
