The University of Macau sincerely invites applications for the position of the Dean of Faculty of Science. Faculty of Science The Faculty of Science was restructured and reorganized from the Faculty of Science and Technology. Its establishment aligns with the strategic needs of the country and the Macao SAR and will provide foundational support in the basic sciences for technological innovation in Macao and nationwide. The Faculty will comprise the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Biological Sciences, and is expected to enrol approximately 1,000 students. Dean of Faculty of Science The successful candidate should have considerable experience in faculty management, academic strategic planning, curriculum design, laboratory setup and research development, and must be highly committed to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and service. In particular, the candidates should have the following credentials: An earned doctoral degree in Science or related disciplines; A distinguished record of internationally-recognized research and scholarship; Evidence of outstanding academic leadership, demonstrated commitment to leading research and a record of effective teaching in higher education settings; Ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, drive technological innovation, and establish relationship with diverse stakeholders; Excellent management and communication skills; Proficiency in English is required as it is the working language, while knowledge in Chinese/Portuguese will be an advantage. Remuneration Remuneration will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to support and contribute to an industry innovation research project. The Research Engineer will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and the research team to develop deep learning-based computer vision algorithms and software for object detection, classification, and segmentation. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project together with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely achievement of project deliverables. Undertake the following specific responsibilities in the project: i. Develop, train, and optimise deep learning models for object detection, classification, and segmentation using real-world datasets. ii. Design and implement software modules to integrate the models into a working system prototype. iii. Perform data annotation. iv. Conduct experiments, analyse results, and iterate models for improved accuracy and efficiency. v. Prepare project documentation, technical reports, and academic publications. vi. Collaborate with industry partners and contribute to technology transfer efforts. Job Requirements Possess strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in: Deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) Deep learning models (e.g., YOLO, U-Net, EfficientNet, ResNet, FPN, Fast R-CNN) Computer vision techniques and algorithms Python and relevant libraries (e.g., PyQt, OpenCV, NumPy, scikit-learn), particularly for developing Windows desktop application software incorporating deep learning models Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic/Software Engineering, or a related field. The selected candidate will contribute to a pioneering research project focused on developing advanced bioinspired, circular-economy-driven biobased functional materials for sustainable agriculture, with a specific focus on water–soil interfaces, water retention, fertilizer/nutrient-controlled release, and soil hydration using multi-source biomass feedstocks. Job duties The successful candidate is expected to: Design, formulate, and characterize biobased materials such as hydrogels, polymers, and composites for agricultural applications. Develop and optimize protocols for the encapsulation and controlled release of nutrients. Investigate water-use efficiency, soil moisture dynamics, and nutrient availability in water-retentive and responsive systems, with relevance to arid and semi-arid agricultural conditions. Utilize a variety of analytical, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques (FTIR, UV–Vis, XRD, DLS, SEM–EDS, TEM, TGA/DSC) for material characterization. Collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all experiments, data, and findings. Prepare manuscripts for high-impact scientific journals and present research at national and international conferences. Contribute to the development of research proposals and seek external funding. Assist in the supervision of master's and doctoral students. Requirements To be considered for this role, ideal candidate is expected to have: A recently awarded Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. Demonstrated hands-on experience in polymer/hydrogel synthesis, biopolymer modification, development of water-retentive formulation, and characterization. Experience or strong interest in sustainable agriculture, controlled-release systems, soil science interfaces, or water management in water-limited environments is an advantage.
