University of Oil and Gas of Ploiești

The university began in 1948 as the Institute of Oil and Gas to train the workforce for Romania’s oil and gas industry. In 1992, the public institution became the University of Ploieşti, and it expanded its fields of study with the addition of the humanities and economics faculties. The following year, the current name, University of Oil and Gas of Ploiești, was adopted. The city of Ploieşti is about 50km north of Bucharest. 

The university has five faculties: the Faculty of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Petroleum Refining and Petrochemistry, the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Letters and Sciences. Together, they offer more than 30 study programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. 

The University of Oil and Gas of Ploiești has more than 5,000 students, several hundred of them from abroad, representing some 25 nationalities.

Despite its name, the university has a broad educational offering. Among the programmes at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD level are courses in: computer science, finance and banking; economy of trade, tourism and services; accounting and management informatics; business informatics; and administration, philology and education. Industry-focused courses include: petroleum and petrochemical equipment; automation and applied informatics; petroleum resources geology; transport; and environmental engineering and protection in industry.

The University of Oil and Gas of Ploiești has a long tradition of teaching international students. It offers them a comprehensive preparatory programme, which includes learning Romanian as a foreign language. The university has hosted students from across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. It also participates in the Erasmus+ student exchange programme.
