About the University of Tsukuba

Basic information and contact details for the University of Tsukuba

The University of Tsukuba was founded in 1973, following the relocation of its predecessor the Tokyo University of Education to the city of Tsukuba.

The university’s main campus is spread across 258 hectares and is still located in the Tsukuba Science City, a science park developed in the 1960s. One in 10 of the residents in Tsukuba is a researcher. The city, which is northeast of Tokyo, is also home to more than 30 per cent of Japan’s national research institutes.

The University of Tsukuba also has a campus in Tokyo, which offers graduate-level evening courses.

The institution has a particular focus on interdisciplinary studies and internationalisation, with international cooperation agreements with North Africa and Central Asia.

Around 70 current and former students at the institution have participated in the Olympic Games. The university also does research and offers courses on the international sporting event.

Meanwhile, the university is home to three Nobel laureates: former presidents of the institution Sin-Itiro Tomonaga and Leo Esaki won the physics prizes in 1965 and 1973 respectively, while professor emeritus Hideki Shirakawa won the chemistry prize in 2000.

Jigoro Kano, the founder of the Kodokan Institute, the headquarters of the worldwide judo community, was the leader of the Higher Normal School and Tokyo Higher Normal School, which were antecedents to the university.

The institution’s slogan is: “Imagine the future”.

Tsukuba is a city in the northern Kantō region of Japan. Mount Tsukuba, also known as the “purple mountain” is famous for its double peaks.

The successful candidate will maintain and develop an active research programme and contribute to professional, community, and iwi engagement relevant to the discipline. The role includes undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of student research, curriculum development, and contribution to the wider Criminology Programme. Salary will be in the range of $92,603 to $110,407 per year based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to lead the storm surge modelling in the Singapore Sea. As a specialist in wave modelling software, the successful candidate will work on cutting-edge projects related to coastal and ocean wave modelling using Delt3D software. The role of the researcher is to perform physics-based modeling to build a numerical model that can predict storm surges in Singapore coastlines based on different weather conditions. The researcher will also work with team members within the consortium in generating necessary data required for developing a machine learning model for storm surge prediction. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Delft3D and SWAN Modelling: Utilize Delft3D and SWAN software to develop and validate numerical models for wave propagation, storm surge modelling, and coastal dynamics. Building up of a database of sea level anomaly with extreme weather conditions: Utilize the developed numerical model to build a database of sea level anomaly with different weather conditions, which can be used to develop a data-driven model for storm surge prediction. Data Analysis: Process and analyze climate, ocean wave and coastal data to improve model accuracy. Research: Conduct research to enhance wave modelling techniques and contribute to the advancement of coastal engineering and oceanography. Impact Assessment: Evaluating the potential impacts of storm surges on coastal regions, including flood risk assessments and vulnerability analyses. Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including hydrodynamic researchers, coastal engineers, and oceanographers. Reporting: Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals and present results at conferences. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Assists in co-supervision of Final Year Projects (FYP) or capstone projects students together with the project PI. The employee is to communicate with any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any adhoc duties assigned. Requirements PhD or Master degree in a related field with a focus on coastal engineering, oceanography, or hydrodynamics. Proficiency in wave modeling software, particularly Delft3D and SWAN. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Research experience in coastal and ocean waves is preferred. Assistant Supervisor -Electrical Reporting to the Supervisor -Electrical, this person is responsible for maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, appliances, electrical lightings and electrical fittings of the university. Primary Responsibilities Key Responsibilities Repair/replace lightings, fan and general purposes outlets (GPO); Upkeep of all electrical fittings, power circuits and electrical appliances in the Student Halls of Residence, academic buildings and staff housing; Wiring of 3 phase and single-phase machines/equipment; Trouble shooting departmental equipment, power circuit boards (3 phase and single phase); In the absence of the Supervisor, supervise Electrical Contractors on campus and ensure all jobs are done according to Unitech’s required standard; Carry out maintenance work on faults as and when required on staff housing, academic buildings and student halls of residence; Attend to all after-hours calls in the absence of the supervisor; Attend to electrical maintenance work of the affiliated colleges of Unitech; Assist Supervisor with conducting daily and weekly tool box meetings with the Electrical section workforce. Job Purpose:  The Research Engineer will support applied research and innovation in sustainability focusing on, but not limited to, the Built Environment sector, working with internal teams and industry partners to develop practical solutions. The role focuses on translating scientific concepts into scalable solutions that address challenges in mitigating the impact of climate change and meeting environmental sustainability target through resource efficiency, energy management, renewable energy, waste management, and other sustainable solutions for various industries. Research engineers will collaborate closely with faculty, professional officers and industry partners to execute commercially viable solutions that address real-world challenges. In the process, research engineers gain valuable applied research capabilities aligned with evolving industry needs. Key Responsibilities: Applied Research & Development Perform sustainability assessment and analysis for organizational green transition. Develop of sustainability solutions and training roadmap development for organizational green transition, focusing on but not limited to the Built Environment sector.
