Founded in 1877 as Western Canada’s first university, the University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg, the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is a research-intensive public university.

The university serves nearly 30,000 students and around 15 per cent of the student body is made up of international students from 111 countries worldwide.

It offers a large study abroad programme where students can choose from 36 countries to take part in service-learning, internships, or exchange programmes.

The university also boasts one of the largest indigenous student populations in Canada, annually enrolling over 2,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.

Manitoba offers more than 100 degree programmes and most of its academic departments include graduate study programmes.

There are 19 libraries at the university housing more than 2.5 million books. This includes more than 700,000 e-books and 70,000 journals.

Available to the public through the university’s digital collection are images, letters, books, newspapers, videos and sound recordings. The Icelandic Collection, home to nearly 27,000 volumes, is the second largest collection of Icelandic materials in North America and the largest in Canada.

The university attracts thousands of visitors each year and supports more than 20,000 local jobs. It claims that for every dollar it spends, $1.85 is generated for the local economy.

In the sports arena, within the elite interuniversity athletics programmes in Canada, Bison Sports – as Manitoba’s teams are known – has more than 360 athletes across nine disciplines. Bison teams have won 42 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championships and its men’s football team has more alumni in professional sport teams than any other CIS team.

A total of 98 Manitoba’s students have been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship award – more than any other university in Western Canada.

Its alumni network comprises over 132,000 people in 131 countries and, in 2014, alumni and friends of Manitoba donated $26.6 million to its upkeep.

Working closely with researchers, engineers and industry partners, you will develop innovative software solutions that leverage Context Awareness, Internet of Things (IoT), Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced data integration technologies to improve manufacturing productivity and decision-making. This role will focus on ARC Digital Manufacturing Hub with Sutton Tools, which aims to develop a "Single Source of Truth" knowledgebase to enable data-driven productivity improvements. About the Role As a Research Associate, you will contribute to the research, design, development and evaluation of advanced software-based solutions in areas including:  Context-aware systems  Internet of Things (IoT)  Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI)  Large-scale distributed systems  Knowledge management and data integration platforms  Digital manufacturing technologies  You will work closely with industry partners to understand business challenges and translate these into practical technical solutions. Success in this role will be measured primarily through project outcomes, industry impact and delivery of research milestones, with publication opportunities encouraged. Key responsibilities include:  Conducting research, development and evaluation of advanced software-based solutions.  Delivering project milestones and outcomes for the Sutton Tools collaboration.  Designing and implementing large-scale distributed and context-aware systems.  Integrating data from multiple heterogeneous sources and platforms.  Working closely with industry partners to understand business challenges and translate them into technical solutions.  Contributing to future research and industry funding proposals.  Collaborating within multidisciplinary teams of researchers, engineers and industry experts.  While research publications are encouraged, performance will primarily be measured through successful project delivery and industry impact.  Please note that due to the fixed-term nature of this role, candidates must already hold valid working rights for the duration of the contract to be considered. About You You are a motivated researcher and software developer who enjoys solving complex real-world challenges and working directly with industry partners. You will have:  Strong programming skills in one or more of the following: Python, Java, C/C++, .NET, JavaScript/React, R, Ruby, Perl or Bash.  Experience in software systems design and development of robust, scalable solutions.  Experience developing distributed, context-aware or data integration systems.  Knowledge of IoT and Applied AI technologies, including machine learning and large language models.  Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and teamwork skills.  Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently.  Desirable  Experience working with manufacturing or industrial systems.  Experience in manufacturing data analytics.  Qualifications A Master's degree, or a Bachelor's degree with Honours and at least three years' relevant research experience.
